Velankanni’s hotels and guest houses cluster within a compact 1.5 km radius of the Basilica of Our Lady of Good Health — most places to stay are a short walk or auto-ride from the shrine. Whether you are visiting for a day pilgrimage or a multi-day stay during the feast, this guide helps you choose the right place and book at the right time.
Where to stay in Velankanni
Near the basilica (Sannathi Street and Church Road)
The streets immediately surrounding the basilica — especially Sannathi Street and the lanes behind it — have the highest concentration of pilgrim guest houses and budget lodges. Staying here means:
- 5–10 minute walk to the shrine entrance
- Easy access to the daily Masses and novena prayers
- Budget-friendly rates in the ₹400–1,000 range for basic rooms
Beach Road area
Beach Road runs alongside the Bay of Bengal, parallel to the basilica. Hotels here often have sea-facing rooms and are still within walking distance (10–15 minutes) of the church. Mid-range options with AC rooms are more common along this stretch.
Main road (NH32/Nagapattinam–Velankanni road)
Hotels on the main approach road from Nagapattinam are slightly further from the basilica (1–1.5 km) but often better connected for arriving by bus. Taxi/auto access is easy and some hotels in this area offer pickup from the bus stand.

Official shrine accommodation
The Velankanni Shrine Room Booking Office manages pilgrim rooms and cottages within the basilica complex itself. These are the most sought-after rooms — affordable, clean, and steps from the shrine. Booking is done through the shrine’s website (vailankannishrine.net) or in person at the booking office.
Important: During the feast and novena (29 August – 8 September), shrine rooms are fully booked weeks in advance. If you are visiting during the feast, try to book shrine rooms early and have a hotel as a backup. See our full shrine room booking guide.
Booking tips
Book early for festival season. The Velankanni Annual Feast draws hundreds of thousands of pilgrims. Accommodation runs out 4–8 weeks before the feast dates. Christmas and New Year are the next busiest periods.
Arrive with a confirmed booking. Walking in without a booking during peak season is risky — even basic lodges fill up. Always pre-book, even if just a phone call to the guesthouse.
Check distance from the basilica. Some “Velankanni” listings on booking platforms are actually in Nagapattinam (18 km away). Look for hotels within 1.5 km of the basilica.
