Thiruvarur and Velankanni are both in Nagapattinam district, just 35 km apart by road via Nagapattinam. However, there is currently no dedicated direct SETC government bus service between Thiruvarur and Velankanni — a gap that surprises many pilgrims.
This guide covers the practical alternatives that locals and pilgrims actually use.
Distance and route
| Route | Distance | Typical time |
|---|---|---|
| Thiruvarur → Nagapattinam | ~17 km | 30–40 min |
| Nagapattinam → Velankanni | ~18 km | 25–35 min |
| Thiruvarur → Velankanni (total) | ~35 km | 1.5–2 hours |
The NH36/SH gives a direct road but is served mainly by private vehicles. Most public transport follows the Thiruvarur → Nagapattinam → Velankanni chain.
Option 1 — Via Nagapattinam (most common)
This is how most pilgrims from Thiruvarur reach Velankanni:
- Thiruvarur → Nagapattinam – Frequent TNSTC buses and shared autos run between Thiruvarur Bus Stand and Nagapattinam Bus Stand (~17 km, ₹20–30 by shared auto, ₹15 by local bus).
- Nagapattinam → Velankanni – From Nagapattinam Bus Stand, autos, share-taxis and local buses run to Velankanni throughout the day (~18 km, ₹30–50 by shared auto, ₹200–300 by private auto).
Total cost by public transport: ₹50–80 per person.
Option 2 — 16185 Velankanni Express (train)
The 16185 Velankanni Express (Chennai Egmore to Velankanni) stops at Thiruvarur Junction (TVR) at 4:10 AM and arrives at Velankanni at 6:30 AM — giving you time to attend the 7:00 AM Holy Mass at the basilica.
| Detail | Info |
|---|---|
| Train | 16185 Velankanni Express |
| Departs Thiruvarur Jn | 4:20 AM |
| Arrives Velankanni | 6:30 AM |
| Journey time | ~2h 10m |
| Sleeper fare | ~₹65–100 |
Book at irctc.co.in or the IRCTC app. This is the most comfortable option for pilgrims who want to be at the basilica for the first Mass. See our full Chennai to Velankanni train guide for IRCTC booking steps.
Option 3 — Private taxi
A private taxi or cab covers the 35 km in 30–45 minutes and costs approximately ₹600–900. This is the fastest door-to-door option, ideal for families or groups. Taxis are available at Thiruvarur Bus Stand and from local cab providers.
Option 4 — Two-wheeler or hired vehicle
If you have a two-wheeler, the Thiruvarur–Nagapattinam–Velankanni coastal road is straightforward and well signposted. Fuel up before leaving as petrol stations are sparse near Velankanni.
Arriving in Velankanni
From Velankanni’s main road or bus stop, the Basilica of Our Lady of Good Health is a short walk (5–10 minutes). See our hotels in Velankanni guide for accommodation options and the shrine room booking office for official pilgrim rooms at the basilica complex.
